What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a cutting-edge therapeutic approach that taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal itself. Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that identifies, processes, and releases core neurophysiological sources of emotional and physical pain, trauma, dissociation, and other challenging symptoms. It’s based on the premise that where you look affects how you feel, utilizing the visual field to find access points to areas in the brain that store trauma and negative experiences.
How Does Brainspotting Work?
Brainspotting works by using the field of vision to locate “brainspots” — eye positions that correlate with unprocessed trauma or emotional distress. During a session, a therapist trained in brainspotting guides the client’s eye movements across their field of vision while the client focuses on a particular issue. The therapist observes the client’s reflexive eye movements, facial expressions, and other physical responses to identify brainspots. Once located, these brainspots provide direct access to the brain’s emotional and body-based systems, allowing for deep processing and healing.
The Science Behind Brainspotting
Brainspotting is grounded in neuroscience and integrates principles from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and somatic experiencing. It leverages the brain’s ability to rewire itself (neuroplasticity) and aims to activate the body’s innate capacity to heal. By focusing on the client’s visual field, Brainspotting helps access the subcortical brain, which is responsible for processing emotions and memories that are often inaccessible through traditional talk therapy. This deep brain processing allows for the release of stored trauma and facilitates profound healing.
Benefits of Brainspotting
Brainspotting offers a wide range of benefits for various mental health challenges, including:
How Brainspotting Helps with Anxiety and Trauma
For Anxiety: Brainspotting helps individuals identify and process the unresolved emotional experiences that contribute to their anxiety. By focusing on brainspots related to anxiety, clients can experience a reduction in symptoms such as excessive worry, panic attacks, and social anxiety.
For Trauma: Brainspotting is particularly effective for trauma because it allows clients to process traumatic memories at their own pace. The brainspots targeted during therapy sessions help unlock and release the trauma stored in the brain and body, leading to a significant reduction in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and other trauma-related issues.
